Prophecy, Déjà Vu, and the Dream State: Questions Concerning the Discernment of Future Events

When speaking of prophecies, we’d do just as well to speak of God’s promises because that’s at the heart of every prophecy

Prophecy, Déjà Vu, and the Dream State: Questions Concerning the Discernment of Future Events

“How do biblical prophecies relate to our everyday experiences, like dreams and déjà vu? It’s a big question, one that challenges traditional views on prophecy by linking it to a very human experience—dreaming… Smith brings to light examples from biblical history, suggesting that these prophecies often came to prophets in dreams or visions, dreams being a fancy way of saying “waking dreams.” This means that the ability to prophesy could be seen as something inherently human since we all dream… In Smith’s view, dreams aren’t just insignificant mental wanderings. They might just be the critical link between past divine messages and everyday experiences of future insights… He invites giving prophecy a more grounded application in everyday life, positioning it as hope amidst uncertainty. What we call prophecy might be a beacon—not a crystal ball—guiding us through life’s chaos with a promise of an ultimate divine purpose…”

The Academia.edu Essay Review Transcript

Welcome to In Depth With Academia, I’m Richard Price, your host and the CEO of Academia.edu, where we dive into academic papers and explore what they mean for the world beyond the ivory tower. Today we’re taking a closer look at the intriguing paper titled Prophecy, Déjà Vu, and the Dream State: Questions Concerning the Discernment of Future Events by W. Kent Smith. It sounds like a fascinating blend, doesn’t it? So, sit back, relax, and let’s unravel what Smith has woven together in this notion-rich work.

First off, let’s just get to the heart of the matter. What is the core question Smith’s paper addresses? Ah, it’s a deep one. Smith asks us to consider: How do biblical prophecies relate to our everyday experiences, like dreams and déjà vu? It’s a big question, one that challenges traditional views on prophecy by linking it to a very human experience—dreaming.

Why is this significant? Well, Smith aims to bridge the mysterious world of ancient biblical prophecies with the very ordinary yet mysterious experience of dreaming that we all have. If accurate, such a connection could shake up how we think about not just prophecy but human consciousness itself. Whoa, right?

I mean, have you ever considered your dreams might hold a connection to ancient prophecies? It certainly gives you something to think about the next time you hit the snooze button. So, um, what are the key findings or arguments in Smith’s paper?

He asserts that while biblical prophecy has traditionally been seen as the domain of divine revelation, it might actually share common ground with human phenomena like déjà vu and dreams. He brings to light examples from biblical history, suggesting that these prophecies often came to prophets in dreams or visions, dreams being a fancy way of saying “waking dreams.”

This means, wait for it, that the ability to prophesy could be seen as something inherently human since we all dream. Smith dives into historical accounts, the dreams of Joseph, the visions of Daniel, noting that a third of The Bible’s prophecies emerge from dreams. That’s like mind blowing, right?

So, in Smith’s view, dreams aren’t just insignificant mental wanderings. They might just be the critical link between past divine messages and everyday experiences of future insights. But hey, remember, we’re not saying this is gospel truth. It’s about sparking thought and conversation.

Now, speaking of conversation and thinking out loud: déjà vu anyone? Do you ever get that freaky feeling where you’re sure you’ve lived through something before? It’s totally weird, like your brain is playing tricks on you. I once had it during dinner at a new restaurant, convinced I’d been there despite never having set foot inside. Smith throws déjà vu into the mix as possibly being our minds tapping into the future via past dreams.

Okay, that’s a lot to chew on. For a moment, imagine if déjà vu is like a mini-prophecy, a sneak peek at what’s to come—only forgotten. Isn’t it fun to entertain ideas like these where your mind is given room to just, uh, float around a bit? Although, you know, this is just a theory.

Smith invites us to think about the connection between these experiences and prophecies without laying it down as a hard fact. But there’s more than meets the eye. Smith isn’t just about proclamations. He’s in the details. Deconstructing the language of prophecy, he highlights that words like “predict” might not capture the intent of biblical prophecy, but instead serve as evidence of “divine promises being fulfilled.” It makes prophecy less about fortune-telling and more about understanding divine messages woven through time.

Now, let’s take a little digression, shall we? Last weekend, I was watching this documentary about ancient civilizations and how they perceived time, not linear, but more cyclical or even interconnected, which, oddly enough, resonates here. Just a side thought. But aren’t such ideas fascinating to tinker with? Okay, back to Smith.

I get it. This topic can feel abstract, but he invites giving prophecy a more grounded application in everyday life, positioning it as hope amidst uncertainty. What we call prophecy might be a beacon—not a crystal ball—guiding us through life’s chaos with a promise of an ultimate divine purpose. It’s comforting, you know? If true or not, the paper offers us a chance to reflect and wonder.

Alright, folks, we’re winding down, so what do we take away from all this? Well, maybe the next time you wake from a particularly vivid dream or find yourself amidst that unusual déjà vu moment, consider it an opportunity to reflect on what it means.

The relationship between dreams, prophecies, and déjà vu might be more connected to our human experience than we realize, or maybe it’s all just an elaborate mental rumination. Either way, it’s all about broadening the scope of our understanding.
